The construction of Vestvolden, an embankment intended to protect Copenhagen against an approaching enemy army, in the 1890s brought the armed forces to Avedøre. The soldiers marched into Avedøre in the morning and marched back to the Ejby camp at night. This could not go on, and in August 1896 the army set up its first military camp at Avedøre, Paradislejren – Camp Paradise.

It was a tent camp, only intended for use in the summer. However, the Danish summer can be wet, and the provisional camp was frequently thick with mud. Camp Paradise was situated between the western part of Avedøre Stationsby and Vestvolden.
